Sam Brewster

Biography

Born 1986 in Scotland, lives and works in Thessaloniki, Greece and London, UK.

During his formative years he went to an international school in Belgium close to Brussels and this upbringing exposed him to a vibrant mix of nationalities and a strange fusion of American, European and British culture. When he moved to England at the age of eight it was a culture shock; one that has since deeply influenced his work and informed his outsider perspective. In his short film, Writer, he re-drew a contemporary take on the 'angry young man' archetype as an an over-entitled young man rather than a beaten-down person. Subsequently, he’s explored other themes such as accident trauma in Undone, lock-down isolation in Fingernails and societal alienation in NO BALL GAMES. In 2024 he won the Canal 180 competition ‘9:16’ with his film Domestication and as a result was invited to complete a project in residence in Aveiro, Portugal where he made Living Normally, a film about the Estado Novo.

When not directing, he also works as an art director and illustrator.
